Addiction touches almost every area of counselling practice. This self-paced online course builds a solid grounding in how addiction develops, how it affects clients and the people around them, and how counsellors can support recovery — starting from the core skills every counsellor relies on.
The course suits people starting out in counselling or training to become counsellors, support workers and volunteers who work with people affected by addiction, and practising counsellors who want to broaden their knowledge as part of their continuing professional development.
This course, and every course in our library, is free for current ABCAP members.

How long does it take?
The course is self-paced, so it’s up to you. Most learners work through one unit at a time, around their other commitments.
What happens if I don’t pass a unit test?
You can retake it as many times as you need — there are no time limits. Passing each unit’s test unlocks the next unit.
How do I get my certificate?
When you pass the final unit, your certificate of completion is issued automatically. You can download it from your course page at any time, and it includes a verification link and QR code.
Is it really free?
Yes — all courses are included with ABCAP membership. If you’re not a member yet, Student membership starts at £4.99 a month.
